Reimagining the homepage of a Japan-based vehicle exporter around on central question: how do you build trust from thousands of miles away?

This was a self-initiated redesign, completed independently and without involvement from ASAP Japan Co.

introduction

Trust has to travel further than the car.

Buying a vehicle from another country requires a different level of trust than most purchases. Customers aren't just evaluating a car—they're relying on a company thousands of miles away to inspect it, communicate honestly, navigate the export process, and help get it home.

Rather than reimagining ASAP Japan's entire website, I focused the project on a narrower question: how could the homepage better communicate the value of their service and build confidence in the people and process behind it?

The concept explores how experience, transparency, process, customer stories, and vehicle inventory could work together to answer that question—giving potential customers a clearer understanding of who they're trusting before they ever get in touch.

the opportunity

The service asks for trust. The website has to earn it.

ASAP Japan already has many of the things that can build confidence in an international vehicle exporter: experience in Japan, access to desirable cars, industry knowledge, and customers around the world. I saw an opportunity for the homepage to communicate more of that value before asking a potential customer to get in touch.

The existing experience.

01

Make the process visible

Importing a vehicle involves more than finding the right car. Giving potential customers a clearer understanding of sourcing, inspection, export, shipping, and delivery could make an unfamiliar process feel easier to navigate.

02

Put evidence behind the service

Experience is more convincing when people can see it. Bringing the company's history, customer experiences, and previous exports forward could give potential customers more reasons to feel confident before making contact.

03

Put people behind the company

International purchases happen at a distance, making the people behind the service especially important. Giving the team a stronger presence could make the experience feel more personal and give customers a clearer sense of who they're trusting with their vehicle.

setting the tone

Trust starts before the first scroll.

The hero needed to do more than introduce ASAP Japan. It had to immediately balance two sides of the experience: the excitement of finding a car worth importing and the confidence that ASAP could help get it home.

I explored how messaging, imagery, hierarchy, and structure could communicate both without making the experience feel like a conventional dealership website.

The Grid

As the direction developed, I used a Golden Canon Grid as a proportional framework for the interface. It gave the increasingly asymmetrical compositions an underlying structure while still leaving room for experimentation with scale, imagery, and whitespace.

In later iterations, I took inspiration from manga's right-to-left reading direction and reversed a familiar web convention—placing the ASAP logo on the right and navigation on the left.

Final Direction

The final direction pairs an emotional reason to import with a straightforward explanation of what ASAP does—allowing aspiration and reassurance to exist in the same first impression.

establishing credibility

Credibility has to come before contact.

Importing a vehicle requires a significant amount of trust before a customer ever makes contact. They're relying on a company thousands of miles away to handle a valuable vehicle, communicate its condition honestly, navigate international logistics and paperwork, and guide them through an unfamiliar process.

That made establishing credibility early in the experience one of the most important goals of the homepage.

clarifying the service

A complicated process shouldn't feel complicated.

Importing a vehicle involves a series of steps that may be unfamiliar to someone doing it for the first time. I wanted the homepage to make ASAP's role easier to understand—showing not only what the team handles, but what a customer can expect throughout the process.

the details matter

I first focused on the individual parts of the service—from vehicle inspections and sourcing to documentation, communication, and worldwide shipping. The goal was to make the breadth of ASAP's involvement visible without overwhelming someone with information.

how the process works
asap japan co

Understanding what ASAP handles is only part of building confidence in the service. I organized the import journey into six straightforward steps, giving potential customers a clearer picture of what to expect from finding a vehicle through delivery.

The experience also needed to acknowledge the emotion behind the process. Importing a car can mean finally finding something someone has spent years searching for, making the decision feel much more significant than an ordinary purchase.

social proof

The strongest reassurance comes from people who’ve already done it.

For someone considering importing a vehicle for the first time, previous customers can provide a kind of reassurance the company can't provide on its own. I wanted their experiences—and the cars they ultimately received—to become a visible part of ASAP's story.

Customer imagery begins in black and white before transitioning to color on hover, bringing the cars and their stories to life through interaction while keeping the default experience visually restrained.
vehicle discovery

Ultimately, the cars are why people are here.

The homepage had spent most of the experience building confidence in ASAP and explaining the service behind importing a vehicle. Featured inventory shifts the focus back to the reason someone started looking in the first place: the cars themselves.

Color with a purpose.

I designed the experience to remain almost entirely monochrome, reserving full color for the vehicles themselves. Customer stories begin in black and white and reveal color through interaction, but featured inventory is the first point on the homepage where color appears without being prompted.

That same approach would continue into the inventory and individual vehicle pages, allowing the cars—not the interface—to become the primary source of color throughout the experience.

about asap

Trust is easier when you know who’s on the other side.

The one exception to the homepage-focused exploration was the About page. As the concept developed around trust and transparency, giving the people behind ASAP a dedicated place in the experience felt like a natural extension. Candid photography and straightforward messaging bring the team forward, putting real people behind the service.

final experience

From Japan to your driveway.

The final homepage brings these ideas together into a single experience—balancing the excitement of finding the right car with the clarity and reassurance needed to begin the process of bringing it home.

Good service starts before the conversation does.

Because this was a self-initiated concept, the next step would be working directly with ASAP Japan to understand their actual customer journey and operational process, validate the assumptions behind the concept, and extend the system across the rest of the experience.

This project was an exercise in designing for confidence rather than transaction. Because the vehicle purchase itself happens outside the website, the homepage has a different responsibility: helping someone understand the service, evaluate the company behind it, explore what's available, and feel comfortable enough to begin a conversation.

That led me to prioritize transparency over persuasion—making the process visible, bringing the people and customer experiences behind ASAP forward, and allowing the cars themselves to provide most of the visual excitement.
